I have duplicates and triplicates of contacts in my iPhone. My iMac only shows one of each. I tried to delete them in the iPhone, but they don't go away

If the contacts are correct on your Mac, replace the contacts on the phone with the contacts on your Mac. Connect your phone to your Mac, open iTunes, go to the Info tab of your iTunes sync settings, confirm that have check Sync Contacts, then further down under Advanced - Replace information on this iPhone check Contacts, click Apply at the bottom to sync your phone.
Didn't work - I still have 3 and 4 of the same contacts. What now? Why won 't it delete them IN the phone. I can edit and choose DELETE, but nothing happens.

Are you syncing them with iCloud? Also, are you syncing contacts from any external sources such as Gmail or a work exchange account?
How do I tell? Is it on my iPhone or my iMac? I can see my contacts on iCloud and the Mac. Also, I don't get the choice in Advanced to select replace my contacts. I also can't check any box under Info> Sync contacts.
If you phone is syncing contacts with iCloud, Contacts would be set to On in Settings>iCloud on your phone. If you are syncing contacts with an exchange account, you would have Contacts set to On in you exchange email account in Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars. Also, when you open Contacts and tap Groups at the top, you would see groups other than iCloud listed.
that was the trick. I had too many groups feeding my contacts - mainly FAcebook. Thank you so much for your persistence and help. There forums are the best thing going. I appreciate it.
