I had purchased and installed Mac OS X Lion on my 15" MacBook Pro but did not save it. I now want to download and install it on my 24" Intel Core 2 Duo iMac but cannot find it. Is it still available on the Mac App Store?

Yes. Phone your national helpline and order it there. You will be given a download code. Be aware, I understand that after being successfully downloaded, the Lion installer code self deletes, which is why you could not find it.

Rather than the "national helpline," by which I guess you may mean AppleCare, one should call the Apple sales store for their country to request an OS X Lion purchase.

Only the most recent version of OS X is sold in the Mac App Store. If you previously bought Lion, you should be able to download the installer again from the Purchases pane of the Mac App Store.

How does that relate to the self delete element, like being in your purchases pane and having self deleted. Not doubting you, you understand, it just seems to be a contradiction.
I'm not sure where you see a contradiction. When a user downloads and uses the Lion installer, as the installation completes, the installer self-deletes from the user's Mac.
Completely, separate from that, all apps that a user has purchased can be redownloaded from the Purchases pane of the Mac App Store, as long as the app is available from the MAS. Because the Lion installer is close to a 4 GB download, it is good to tell folks that they might want to make a copy so they don't have to download such a large file multiple times, especially if their ISP limits their bandwidth.
