when trying to connect to network with my iphone5, I pick the network, enter password and get message "unable to join the network- dismiss". How can I resolve this? I can access the network with another Iphone5 that is right next to this one.

Try Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Do forget the auto detect wi-fi network that you have problem connecting to.
Create one by using Other... and key in the Wi-Fi network info manually.

I am assuming you have tried rebooting, reseting network settings, forgetting and rejoining the network and as such.
If these do not work, sometimes routers have a maximum connected devices limitation. So you can try switching off wi-fi on your other iPhone and connecting with this one to check if that's the case.
