Correction: I have firmware version 9.52 on the modem card, which claims to be an apple AirPort card.
The machine is an iBook PowerBook 4,1, cpu type PowerPC 750 (22.15), with boot ROM version 4.2.04f, Sales Order Number M8520 X/A and serial number UV1340KFLBT.
I am running OS X 10.4.11 with all upgrades that Apple provides.
On <http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21448?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US#>, it says that “
WPA is a very secure encryption method that is now preferred for computers that can use it.”, but the reference to computers that can use it (<http://www.apple.com/support/?artnum=107795>) is no longer available.
I searched widely before sending in this question, and somewhere, there was a throwaway line that version 9.52 is the latest, but nowhere in Apple’s notes can I find this.
My conclusion from reading the many articles is that I should be able to use this iBook with this operating system and this firmware upgrade on a standard AirPort card for WPA, but not WPA2.
Indeed, I can set up the Airport to connect to my modem using WPA(2)[Personal | Enterprise], and I set if up for WPA Personal with a 26-digit Alphanumeric key to match that in my modem, which is set to WPA-Personal/WPA2 only using AES encryption, but when I actually try to connect, I am only presented with WEP and Leap options.
Someone suggested that it could be a modem protocol problem, so I will try an alternate setup: I am using a D-Link DSL-2642B with Firmware Version: AU_2.10 at home, but am tryingto use it on an earlier D-Link modem elsewhere, both with not luck.
The only other alternative I can think of is that the suggestion that a normal AirPort card (as opposed to AirPort Extreme) simply will not do WPA no matter what firmware is installed.
