Uploading error codes - what to do ??

While trying to upload my Book, I received error codes

Now, at least, I do have an idea, WHERE the problem might be – but not, what the problem is and how to solve it (in other word: is the widget wrong, a picture IN the widget or the representation of the widget ??):

Even WITHIN a widget, the filenames of the images you use, are not allowed to have other characters then a to z, 1 to 0, - and _, no EMPTY Spaces. If you change the names of the images, replace them in the whatever-program-you-use-to-create-a-widget, save and re-import the widget into your iBook, no upload errors occur.

Hhm,

don't know, if it is worth discussing; but I don't get it. When I create an image, say in photoshop, and store it, I'll be asked to give it a name, and I do so. There is no way, to use a certain font while storing or naming an image. Perhaps you mean "language", such as sanskrit or taiwanese? When I say "font", I mean Times New Roman or Rotis or else - and as far as I now, I can't chose a fonttype to name a file (it is a system function though, isn't it).

So, you are still talking on images. The errorcode, I mentioned lately occured within "document warnings" and said, there are TIMES and LUCIDA typefonts in use, that are not supported (... but I could ignore it). The remaining question now is: how to find these "wrong" typefonts within the document, when you don't find while scrolling through the document.

As I said: probably not woth the discussion ...

I had warnings that specified images with 'broken' names. Those names were tied to screenshots from a windows computer using an Asian font. The result was a garbled file name because the font was supported on my computer now.

I located those files and renamed them, saving as new images - I then removed the originals and used the new files with legible names and the warnings cleared and all was well.

Those User Tips should have a 'Comments' field. Alternatively, you can put your comments in this thread and I'll be happy to link to it if you like. Note that after making that tip 9 months ago, I've chosen not to add to it it given the complexity and continuing evolution of the topic since then.

I think it's better for users to contact Apple to learn any new info directly, etc.

As I said: related to your "Tips+Tricks":

YOU wrote
Change hyperlink color:

There are many predefined styles with each template, and they are modifiable. Hyperlink color is one of those 'styles'.

Follow this process to change:

• In your document/book, select a word/text - any word will do.

• Color/style it as you'd like your hyperlinks to appear.

• Enable Styles Drawer from the View menu.

• Locate/select the Hyperlink style in the drawer and right/cntrl-click to select.

• Choose - 'Redefine Style from Selection - in the pop-up menu.

My Comment:

User uploaded file
Before: When hyperlinking a word to become a bookmark, font changed to red, which I don‘t like (especially not on my ContentSite).

Then: I tried to follow your process - but failed. More precisely: Somehow, while trying, I managed, but I couldn‘t replicate. So I used a work around (copying the „working“ bookmark and changing the „JumpAdress“.

KT-01.jpg shows my failing process (While trying, I used ctrl/right Click, but it either changed the style or created a new style)

Obviously, I miss something, but I can‘t find out, what.

Speaking more in general: as I am German (using a german interface) translating is always an issue (weather because of missing vocabulary OR because co-related terms have different meanings - so that I can‘t identify them in the menues OR because you leave out something „one should know“, but can‘t identify during translating word by word). See, I‘m not a complete dummy, but once you don‘t follow a hint WORDbyWORD, you fail in terms of „something seeming obvious is not; and once you do follow, you fail, because yo do not identify what is assumed between the lines …

So why am I saying this: It seems to me, that you are answering the "right" questions (questions I have, that is), but I fail to make use of your hints because of ¿tiny? ¿little? misunderstandings.

Best regards

Another question is concerning "duplication" of a book (in your Tips+Tricks).

I understood: do not duplicate - instead create a new book from a template you created.

But

I want to upload my book in chapters (so it is the same book in parts; new coverpage for every Chapter, new preview, some changes concerning the linking (I killed all links to adresses that no longer exist in this chapter). So more or less: the same content, only chapterwise.

What is the possible damage if I upload these chapters?

Alternatively when creating a template FROM THE WHOLE BOOK, what would be the difference (when deleting those dispensed chapters ...)?

Kind regards!

Those tips are at best subjective. They are not meant to be exhaustive, only to replace repeated replies here on what I see over time as frequently asked questions. I point people there and if they need to discuss something particular to their use, practice or style at a given time with a given version of IBA, and if I have something to add, I expect a specific dialog here. Doesn't seem productive to do both at the same time.

At some point, if they grow and grow and become so honed that everyone benefits from every word, I'll move them into a book and put it in the store 🙂 - as it stands now, if they help the majority, then I feel good about what they provide.

As far as tiny things being lost in translation, I hope you can appreciate this all comes out of my free time and it's up to any non-native English speaker to carry that burden. FWIW, I'm more sensitive to Asian users given a choice of support in that regard 🙂.

I also hope that anyone with the time, inclination and access adds their own tips.

I'd encourage you/everyone to spend as much time as possible exercising the tool - days and days and day, not just a free afternoon, etc. I'm not recommending one specific workflow (everyone has their own) as much as discouraging non-linear editing, which seems to be the fastest way to corrupt an iBA file.

But again, it's important to learn iBA strengths and weaknesses on your own and not try to rely on just a recipe you pick up off the 'net.

Sorry for bothering you.

It's not, what I intended.

As you are such an expert in this community, I misunderstood your role as well – when I couldn't imagine that it is your free time. Frankly spoken, I somehow thought, "your'e maybe one the guys apple is paying because their official support is such a mess." In that respect or mindset, I tried to find someone to discuss some issues, I can't solve or I'm not sure about. I totally respect your approach and I thank you for the help that you provided!
