is there a way to connect ipad (1st gen) to a tv monitor?
I would like to connect my ipad to a television so I can utilize the larger screen as display. Is there a way to do this? The TV has hdmi port

Depends on exactly what you want to do. The First Gen iPad does not have the ability to mirror its screen, so you won't see its entire screen on the TV.
However, if you want to watch a movie off the iPad or play a slideshow of pictures from the Photos App, you can use the Av Digital Adapter to connect the iPad through and HDMi cable. These Apps will output video through the Adapter to be seen on the TV.
