I am getting a Safari PDF viewer I have neve seen before. It shows the document as a very small image, does not have a print or save to disk icon, and has an icon that reads "Open PDF in Viewer."  Is this something new or can I get the Preview viewer I am used to seeing back? I have deleted Adobe Reader and all it's PDF viewer plug-ins. I am using Mountain Lion.

Thanks,

Jacob

    Back up all data.

Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):

    /Library/Internet Plug-ins

    In the Finder, select

    Go Go to Folder

from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.

From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.

The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.

If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:

    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins

If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

Thanks but this didn't work. I ran Disk Doctor and re-installed Safari and still no luck. Problem persists.

    Thanks again,

Please remove the Silverlight plugin, as suggested above, and relaunch Safari. If there's no change, restore it from a backup.

Are you having this problem with all sites, or only one? If only one, please post a link, if possible. If all, test with this page:

All PDF's, including on this page. I have attached screenshots of what I get. The page that comes up and the menu bar at the bottom with four icons; increase and decrease size, open PDF in Preview, and save PDF to Downloads Folder. It apparently is not opening in Preview but can be if the Open PDF In Preview icon is used.

When you click the magnifying-glass icon with the plus sign to zoom in, do the pages get bigger?

  • otjacob Level 1 Level 1

Yes. Bigger and smaller both work.

So the problem is the default view settings. Try the solution suggested in this thread:

Tried them all, no difference except for two things. 1) Somewhere along the line the viewer started showing the standard one page view but still the "other" viewer and 2( there is no safari.plist, safari is not creating one. This is new.

Triple-click the line below to select it:

    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

    Services Show Info

from the contextual menu. An Info dialog should open.

Does the dialog show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section?
In the General section, is the box labeled Locked checked?
    What is the Modified date?

BTW, I keep forgetting there are two libraries; root and user. The plist was in user. You probably knew that.

Yes, I have read and write permissions.

    Locked is not checked.

    Created and mdified today.
