using Time Machine with external Seagate drive

I bought a Seagate GoFlex for Mac external drive to use for a backup. I have been having fits with it for sometime. I use it in conjunction with Time Machine. It will work fine for a period of time, and then if by chance I have an unexpected Shut Down; it will not be recognised on my desktop, and will not perform a Backup. I run Disk Utilities, Disk Utilities from my Startup Disk; usually with no good results. I then am forced to Erase and reformat the disk. This rather defeats the purpose as a Backup.

I've contacted Seagate Support several times. They've never been able to resolve the issue.

I am wondering if anyone knows if this is a compatibility issue with Seagate GoFlex and Mac OS 10.6.8 and/or Time Machine. Has anyone else experienced anything similiar; or have asuggestion? The GoFlex is still under warranty, and I can return it for a replacement. It doesn't make much sense to interchance them if the same issue will occur.

Any advise will be welcome; as Seagate doesn't seem to know what the resolution is.

Return it, you should not have any trouble with TM drive, I have 2 Iomega, and 2 OWC. Never had any problems. Return it and get something that works!

The HD in the GoFlex tends to run hot (you can't feel it because your hand is protected by the unventilated plastic case) and Seagate's solution has been to have the HD sleep unexpectedly irrespective of your Energy Saver preferences. If you can get a refund, follow AnaMusic's advice and link; otherwise, see if you can swap it for a different brand, perhaps Western Digital. If you must deal with Seagate, the newer GoFlex drives with the square rather than rounded corners seem to have a bit of ventilation built in. But I wouldn't trust Seagate for my only backup.
