I have same problem. Cannot upgrade to the available update at ios 4.2. I replaced a failing itouch battery with a refurbished itouch they gave me at Apple Store. I keep getting error message -1. I have been told by Apple support to take it back. Problem is I think I had an Itouch 3g and they gave me a 2g. Unfortunately I didn't know the difference as they look the same. I sense a difficult visit on Monday to the store!

I assume that your iTunes downloaded latest upgrade available for your device. Then bring your device into DFU mode by following the steps below and then wait until iTunes detect your device in recovery mode, then wait for it to complete the recovery process. That's it. Your upgrade will be done.

Entering DFU Mode

  1. Plug your device into your computer.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Hold the Power button for 3 seconds
  4. Hold the Home button without releasing the Power button for 10 seconds
  5. Release the Power Button but keep holding the Home button
  6. Keep holding the Home button until you are alerted by iTunes saying that it has detected a device in Recovery Mode

Make sure the device screen is blank and no logos are present

Wait for the process to complete. Your job will be done. I am able to upgrade using the above process which initially wasted my whole day with same -1 error code in recovery process.

All the best.
