Feb 4, 2016 7:33 PM in response to jclements77by badgers11081,When you hold "D" while restarting, it does not pull up a screen that says that it is running the test. It is running the test in the background and then it will prompt you to login to your user and you won't see a screen about the test at all. If you go to your Apple drop-down menu in the top left and select "About This Mac". Then click on "System Report" and under the "Hardware" tab, select "Diagnostic" and it will show you the result of your "Power On Self-Test" that you performed by pressing and holding "D" on start-up.

Feb 20, 2016 1:25 PM in response to badgers11081by easyway,Thanks for the heads up. I'd had to run diagnostics on my iMac earlier and the 'D' method opened a window to show that diagnostics was running. When I tried the same on my older MacBook Pro, I was puzzled by what appeared to be a non event. Your info is spot on. Thanks again.

Mar 17, 2016 11:12 AM in response to John Sawyer1by John Sawyer1,Also, some older Macbooks require a firmware update before they can run Apple Hardware Test from their startup drive; however, even this may not work on some Macbooks like the Macbook Pro 15 Inch Mid 2010, as I also discovered:
