iCalendar Defaults for all day events

Hi, I don't want my iCalendar events to automatically default to all day events. Can I change this & how? I have looked under 'Preferences' but can't see anything there. Thanks

iMac (27-inch Mid 2010), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

If you follow the event name with the start time it will make it one hour.
