Q: How to give Aperture access to the System Trash?

Hello,

I'm using Aperture 3.4.3. from two different PC (an Imac and a McbookPro). The Aperture library file and the original pictures folder are in the same external volume (TimeCapsule) so when I open Aperture from one or other PC I do use the same library file.

The problem that I have is that when as ask for empty the Aperture trash (to delete copies and original files) Aperture tells me that I do not have access to the volume system trash so Aperture Trash gets empty but when I go to the external Hard-Disc (Time Capsule) the originals are still there, the have not been deleted.

How can I give Aperture access to the volume system trash of this external volume?

I do have access throught Finder so I can delete whatever file and picture I want but if I do it throught Aperture the original pics are not deleted...

Maybe I have not well configured the Airport Aplication UItility for my time capsule... Is there anyone that have got the same problem.

Thanks.

If you are using Aperture from two different accounts, you should put the library onto volume with the "Ignore Ownership" flag set. Otherwise you will run into all kinds of permission issues.

On your TimeCapsule - if you insist to have the library on a network volume, create a writable disk image, formatted MacOS X Extended, and move the Aperture Library onto this disk image. (On a remote drive Aperture will be slow and you are risking transmission errors).

The procedure is explained here for iPhoto Libraries, but for Aperture Libraries holds the same:

iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users

    Hello Leonie,

Thanks for your quick answer !!.

I do use Aperture from two different accounts (2 different pc) to symplife my home use, if one PC is used I get the other one or just for the confort or being in one piece of the house instead of anyother one....

That's why I saved my library is on the external volume (TimeCapsule) tha I have in my home network. This way I can acces and open it from any PC I login (if I have Aperture). That's why I have it there. Aperture preferences are exactly the sames in each PC and Aperture works perfectly either if I work in one or another PC (I just have a McBookPro and an Imac). As it's working through my home network I might have a slower speed to save, import, export... but it works correctly (even faster than my last external volume -XtrayZ-). The only problem I have at this moment is the one I asked help: if I want to delete original files, when emptying Aperture trash, it tells me that there is no access to the system trash so the pics are out of the aperture library but not deleted from the TimeCapsule....

How do I know if I have the ignore ownership flag set? (this will let me know if that is the problem).

    Thanks,

I understand perfectly, why you want your library accessible over the network.

I don't have a TimeCapsule, so I cannot check, what your TimeCapsule volume will look like in the Finder. Make a "File > Get Info" on the disk. If your Aperture LIbrary is on a volume, that is suitable for Aperture, you should see something like this: Disclose the "General" brick: The file system must be "MacOS X >Extended Journaled" for Aperture to work properly, and at the bottom of the panel, in the "sharing and Permissions" brick, the "Ignore Ownership on this volume" flag should be available.

I suspect your TimeCapsule has a different file system, but you could create a local filesystem on it, by storing a writable diskimage on the TimeCapsule, that is formatted correctly, as described in the article that I pointed to.

I will not be able to get online again until tomorrow, so I hope somebody else will take over.

    Thanks !!

Well if I see my volume, I do not the same format as you and I do not even have your option (ignore ownership...) that's why I ask you about it, because I never heard about that option...

I can see that I do not have the format you have, mine is Appleshare and I'm not sure that I can change it...

    See the picture:

As you can see for "everyone" I have a forbidenn access... and I cannot change to read&write because it says that I do not have enouth permissions.... Crazy because I'm administrator...

The volume (as it's) works pretty well with Aperture (import, export...etc) the unique pb is the trash access...

    What do you think?

    No I don't.

If I get the volume of the disk I see:

I can see that I cannot change the access to the disc that I have in Time Capsule from forbiden to read&write to anyone and I think that the key is right there... I do not think that having a format called: appleshare is the real problem because it works well. The question is having access to change the access to the disk...

Hello that's what I have on my disc volume infos..

    PastedGraphic-1.png

you can see that for "everyone" the access is forbidenn, when I try to change it I have a message that I do not have enought authorisation (I do not understand because I'm administrator) and what is quite weird is that I do have the possibility to delete files and whatever from finder...

I have no idea why this happens, why Aperture doesn't have access to the system trash to delete the original files (because I do not have any problem at all to import pictures from my TC disc or to export from aperture to the TC disc so this means that the workflow goes well !!!).

    Do you have any idea??

as léoniesaid you have first create a disk image using Disk Utility tool, locate it on your Time Capsule and mount it.

The problem here is that the Library is on a network device. Remember this article:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3252

    and the specific note:

Also, it is strongly recommended that the Aperture library be stored on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing the Aperture library on a network share can also lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.

I have the same issue and I could use a resolution to this as well, did any of these suggestions work for you?  What I have had to do is is: (this method is slow but it freed up the space I needed on my NAS.  AFTER I emptied the Aperture Trash Bin and got the "Aperture cannot access the System Trash message...".  (I use a Referenced Library, not Managed)

    1. While working in Aperture, I select all the images I want to keep in a particular project (the keepers).

    2. Export Original of all the masters (of the keepers) into another Finder folder on the NAS drive, essentially copying them, but this isolates them from the main Finder folder where you have ALL the images including the ones you want to delete. (this can take awhile but you should now have duplicate masters of all the images you want to keep, in their own Finder folder.

    3. Then manually delete all the masters in the original Finder folder, leaving you only with the new Finder folder with copies of all the masters you want to keep.

    4. Then in Aperture, re-associate all the keeper versions with the new masters by using the "Locate Referenced Files" function in Aperture.

This worked for me, preserving all my adjustments in the Aperture Library etc, and removed all the non-keepers from my NAS drive that I won't need again.  Amazing how much space was freed up by actually deleting all the "non-keeper" images.

UPDATE:  Actually, a simpler way to do this is (after step 1), just choose the Relocate Original Files option, (instead of exporting the original files).
