A 1st gen iPod? The one with a mechanical scroll wheel and the buttons outside the wheel?
You'll need to have a Firewire cable and a computer that accepts Firewire... and iTunes.
Or is there more to this question?

Yes, it's that version. The trouble is, I think the hard disk has been erased and I'm not sure if it can be restored. I do have more up to date means of playing music, this is just a history trip!
If the iPod is in working, you should be able to connect it to iTunes and load music on it. You will need the Firewire cable.
The key is to have iTunes see it. If you connect it to your computer and it's not seen in iTunes, there may be bigger problems that would be worth fixing.
Sorry, but your trip may not go very far. 🙂
It should sell on eBay for a few dollars, so don't throw it away. But it could also be cool to keep just to show what we USED to have for an iPod. I have a 1st gen 5gb on a bookshelf. I should probably have it behind glass and a sign that says, "In Case of Emergency..." LOL.

Hey, it holds a whole 200 songs. The Science Museum want it but I'm more intersted in getting it working again.
