Ergonomic Laptop Stands for MBP 17

I'm looking for a good ergonomic laptop stand for the MBP 17. The main features I'm looking for:

- has to be comfortable while sitting on a couch or in bed
- has to effectively help in cooling

I've looked at the iLap, but I'm not too convinced that it effectively cools the machine. Sure, it's aluminum but its flat and that little hole in the middle I feel is more for show than function.

Can anyone help?

Thanks to all in advance.

I use the iLap with my new MBP17 and like it. Only downside is that I have to remove the 'cushion/wristrest' even when used on lap but that's probably due to a combination of computer size and gut (not necessarily in that order 🙂

I like the iLap as it's light and leaves lots of airspace between itself and legs and gives the computer the space it wants/needs.

Legs and computer stay at normal operating temps regardless of length of time used, I.e. hours and hours.

Wow, seems this iLap is very popular.

Just my 2 cents re mouse table addition:

It would make it too big and even if it's like a drawer, too heavy.

I used a bean-cushion type table for my Sony before the 17 and it has room for a mouse but any additional weight makes it uncomfortable after a while.

My solution to needing a mouse on ocasion is to use a usb/optical or even bluetooth. It's not as fussy re the surface they need to run on so work quite well on the couch cushion. I expect to be needing one less since I discovered the two-fingers on pad for a right-click.

I guess it all depends on ones usage. I do my lap-topping during the nightshift, I.e. working while 'couching'. My other hope is to laptop it outside.

Greetings,

Through several Mac laptops, I have been using: Levenger Lap Desk
Price: $38.00 Item: AD4640

Works great for my 17" PowerBook. I am confident it will also work for my MacBook Pro 17" which shipped today.

Kind regards,

Bill

Hey, that's a great product Bill. Thanks! Much more practical (and affordable). Not sure about cooling though. Any thoughts?

Congratulations on deciding to use a laptop tray or stand for using your notebook in bed or on a couch. Even the least ergonomic ones will leave an air space beneath the computer (important for cooling) and will protect you from the heat of the case bottom.

I've used or tested a variety of trays or stands over the years.

For my 15" MPB I've bought a KoolSink aluminum tilt stand. It's a very simple and quite effective design. It protects the finish of my desks and keeps the MBP's case cooler during operation. I like the tilt angle for typing. It works reasonably well for laptop use. And it's convenient for travel, as the MBP will fit inside it and the two together fit into my laptop bag (I slip a sheet of paper between them, to protect the finish of the MBP).

The price, especially combined with a high shipping cost, may seem high for what is really no more than a well-conceived and formed sheet of aluminum. But it is effective.

I also like the iLap. I think the KoolSink is a bit more effective in cooling while the notebook is in desktop use, and the KoolSink is more compact for travel use.

But if I planned to make more use of the MBP in my lap than I normally do, I would have chosen the iLap.

Both the KoolSink and the iLap assist cooling by providing more metal heatsink to absorb and dissipate heat by convection to the air. Both do a good job of leaving air space under the notebook and protecting the user while in laptop use.

I don't see any advantage to using trays with little built-in fans that draw current from the computers battery. Many of them are made of plastic (no heatsink/convection transfer value to speak of) and some are shoddily made.

That koolsink really looks neat although for roughly the same price, the cushening of the iLap might be nicer. But then again, the iLap isn't practical to travel with. Hmmm.

How does actual typing on the iLap compare with the Koolsink? Does the cushening actually make it nicer? Is this cushening good material? or is it the type that rips over time? Can you buy replacement pads? None of this info is on their website (unless I missed it somehow)
