Select Audio Output Manually
I use optical output with DAC. But sometimes I want to play music via built-in speakers. How can I change output device manually?
iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

To change the audio output, open System Preferences > Sound > Output, and select "Internal Speakers"
Nope, bad guess. OS decides to temporary remove "Internal Speakers" option until optical jack is in.
Have you tried to reset the PRAM? This will reset sound settings
It is a brand new freshly unpacked iMac with no additional software nor settings. It is about how programmers decided to write an audio output logic. At least by default behaviour.
The question is:
Is there uncommon way how to setup (hack) "intelligent" audio output switcher?
You can not switch back and forth when something is plugged into the Audio Output (headphone) port, because there is a micro switch built into the port that only allows the software to output thru the Audio Output (headphone) port.
