For location the iPod uses the location nearby wifi routers that are in Apple's data base. You do not have to be connect to the router.
Thus, it appears that the router the iPod is using does not have the correct location in Apple's database. Apple continuously updates their database based on data it obtains from iPhones. No one has found a way to tell apple to correct/add a wifi router to their database.
Apple's Location Services use the Skyhookwireless database. The basic sequence is skyhook - > Cell triangulation - > GPS Receiver. If you have an iPhone, its a good idea to add your local Wifi MAC address to the skyhookwireless database, as it makes the location services far more effective and faster. It also saves battery life. Almost three years ago Apple stopped using SkyHook and started using their own database.
So my iPod uses location services threw my router?? I've reset my router but its still not correct
The Apple database is cross reference of the router (identified by its unique MAC address) and its physical locations. Apple get the location by data received for iPhones (and maybe iPAds with cellular). The phones get the data when when they are near your router.
I have a modem/router in one by tds, it does not give out location services.
Again, the database is just a list of Routers (by their MAC address) and their location. It is like a street sing. The router does not actively do any location function.
Ok I'm not really following. Is there anyway of me fixing this?? How do I fix it??
Get someone to visit you who has a newer iPhone (must have GPS) and make sure that they connect to your wifi network.
