Garageband: opening a file from an old version in new garageband

Hello!

I wonder if anyone could help me. I have a new MacBook Pro. I used to have a PowerBook G4 (2005) and have garageband projects I was working on when my computer suddenly wouldn't start anymore. I have all the .band files but they won't open with Garageband on my new mac. (The dialogue box says it can't be opened as it might not be in the right format.) I haven't used garageband on the mac before and indeed the icons for the example files look different to the icons for my old files.

Please help! If there's any way to open the file or get the music from within or even is it possible to download an old version of garageband? The music projects I have are recordings of children with disabilities I've promised to put on CD for them so I would really like to get to them if at all possible!

Thanks for your time!
