I have a gmail account. Outgoing server, smtp.gmail.com gores off line for unknown reason. Will appreciate help.

My iMac is running OS 10.6. I have email accounts with Verizon and Gmail. The Verizon email account works fine, both incoming and sending out. I am experiencing trouble with Gmail smtp server. It goes off line and I cannot send out gmails.

I will appreciate help.

Note: I have recently upgraded OS from 10.4 to 10.6.8
