Why is it taking Mountain Lion so long to check the Mac HD before installing?

I've done everything the instructions have said: now I have iOS 6.8 I click on install for Mountain Lion, I read and agree, then it goes into Checking "Macintosh HD" mode, all night and into the next day. I've restarted it, same thing. It's an intel IMac. What am I doing wrong?
