Problem when I went into User Tip Here

I was just now browsing thru the User Tips on this site. Went into "Harden Your Mac Against Malware". Was reading thru the spot where it talked about online banking and only do that with funds you could afford to lose. There was a link to click, I thought for more information. I dont normally go around clicking things on the internet but I sure thought I was safe here. Anyway, I had a screen that said something about german banking and a little popup window that said it was malicious malware and could harm my computer. Then I could not get out of it, I had to force quit. I did and yet it came right back up. The final time I was finally able to get the force quit to take.

Now I am petrified. Does anybody know why this happened and have I done anything by clicking on that link?

Have I done something to offend someone on this site? I am a new macbook pro owner, have had it 2 weeks. Was a windows user and so I do seem to have many questions re my MBP. I thought this site liked to help new mac users but I seem to have a hard time getting my questions answered. Once they slip to the second page, they are never answered.

I am very concerned about this Malware Warning popup that I got. I was in Safari. And I got it when I clicked on a link here while reading in this site's User Tips. it was the one called "10,001 Mac Questions" and "Harden Against Malware". I just dont know if there is a way I can check and make sure I dont have anything malicious on my new Mac now. I had Webroot Spyware and MS Essentials on my last PC and felt safer with those.

I visitd the site in Safari and got this, it this what you saw?

User uploaded file

Even if you saw something other than this and you Force Quit the browser, then you did the right thing. 🙂

Read a report from Cisco yesterday that stated malicious advertising and browser iFrame attacks are the two largest malware attack vectors for computer users.

Also supposedly there is a attack going on via the Facebook link in the popups.

I'll keep a eye this site and if I see anything suspicious I'll delete the link, quote the article and notify the website.

Perhaps they caught it now and it's fixed.

Thanks 🙂

The people here answering questions are only other Mac users volunteering their time to do so, we have no set hours or timetable.

The majority are from the United States, so most are online at daylight hours there.

Some of us only work certian forums and stay out of others.

Another Level 6+ alerted me of your post in the special Lounge area where we frequent.

I'll go check the other User Tip in question. 🙂

ds store, greetings: I got that display via Firefox. When I went in there a second time it was gone. I deleted cookies and the third time it was there.

Ciao.

It's just a site popup, clicking the X to close causes no download to occur or request for a Admin password to install anything.

Far as I can tell it's harmless. But the OP saw something else so I'll keep a eye on it. 🙂

I apologize to all of you. I value your input as you seem like experts.

Dsstore - no that isnt what I got. I got no web page. There was one line at the top of screen that said german banking, there may have been a few (very few) more letters with it, no actual other words tho. In my haste to get off,I cant quote that line exactly. Then in the middle of the screen there was a box that said “Malware Warning, this site will harm your computer". But the screen was frozen and wouldnt close. I did shut down, power up after I force quit. I cleared History too, dont know if that helped anything.

Csound1 - i will remove all website data but I dont know how to go to the extensions page.

Well click on it again, does the same thing happen again?

Two of us report this site as exactly as shown, it's the same on my Windows and Linux vm's too. so that's 4 machines.

If it only occurs on your machine, perhaps there is something wrong with it.

Did you or someone else install something?

Perhaps you need to have someone there take a look at the machine, Apple gives 3 months of free support for new hardware purchases, perhaps you should get some one on one appointment time?

Hopefully you asked me to be more specific before you saw my last post because I dont know how to be more specific than that, I just saw a blank page, no web page, just the one line at top of screen that said german banking and then the Malware Warning box, it had a red banner at the top of box.

I also figured out how to find what extensions I have. I have one "Click Toplugin". I have not added that myself, I did try unsuccessfully last week to install Adobe Flash Player. Even had Apple Support line try to help and they couldnt do it either. I ended up installing Google Chrome for the built in flash and am satisfied with that. I did the uninstall after Flash install failed, from Adobe's website also. But I'm thinking that Click ToPlugin may have gotten installed somehow during that process. That probably did not have anything to do with my ending up on that malicious site but nevertheless, should I delete that Click ToPlugin extension and if so, it has an uninstall by its name (as I look at it in Safari- Preferences - Extensions). So is that a safe way to uninstall it. Or do I need it for something?

Thank you very much for trying to help this very non tech newbie.

In clicking on the link above, I get the same normal looking screen from the screenshot above. I am afraid to go back and try again inside that link in 10,0001 Mac Questions, Harden against Malware. I know you cant explain why my machine might have gone some strange place that others havnt tho, not questioning that. Just wanted to know if my MBP might have been attacked by something on that place I visited.

If you are seeing something different for a particular link than everyone else, you are probably victim to some kind of redirecting attack. There are a variety of ways this could happen... see:

Eliminating browser redirects and advertisements

Regarding ClickToPlugin, that is not at all malicious. It can be found here:
