iphone not working after itune update

i updated itunes and then the phone needed an update. it took ages then a message came up saying that itunes has dectected a iphone in recovery mode. you must restore this iphone to the factory settings. i clicked ok to do this and said the it could not detected the phone. now the screen on the phone has a picture of a USB an arrow pointing up to the itunes sign. the phone will now not work at all. any ideas on how to resolved this? I have been at this since 17:45!
