Cannot connect to new laptop

I have a 30 GB Ipod 5th Gen (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353#ipodfifth) and I'm having trouble getting it to connect to my new laptop via USB. If I plug it into my old Dell desktop computer, it starts syncing just fine, but when I plug it into the laptop, nothing happens.

Laptop Specs:

Product Name: HP 2000 Notebook PC

Product Number: C2M60UA#ABA

Total Memory: 4.00 GB

Processor: Intel Core i3-2328M CPU @ 2.20GHz

Operating System: Windows 8 64 BIT

I have the newest version of Itunes for Windows (64Bit) installed. I have already tried updating USB drivers; disabling and re-enabling USB ports, trying different USB cables, and resetting the Ipod while connected to computer (20+ times), with no avail. I have tried all three USB ports, and they all work with other things like my thumbdrive and mouse/keyboards. When you plug the Ipod in, it doesn't show up in the computer or itunes at all, and it doesn't show that is charging or trying to sync either. When you plug it into my Desktop, the Ipod immediately says Do Not Disconnect and starts syncing, so it has to be a problem between the laptop and the Ipod. Does anyone know if there is some sort of incompatibility between these laptops and old ipods, or is something else going on?
