there is a new version of mac os x, the 10.8, how come i didn't get it when i press "software update"?

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.5)

If you are running OS 10.7.5 as indicated, you will need to purchase Mountain Lion 10.8.2,

Because you need to buy it from the Mac App Store.

Updates, where the minor number changes as in 10.7.1 to 10.7.2 are free and received via software update.

Upgrades, where the major number changes as in 10.7 to 10.8 are paid and need to be purchased in the Mac App Store (in the case of Mac software).
