Hello.
When I upgraded my old iMac to Mountain Lion, it kept my desktop background from prior versions (I like the "wavy" patterns from Snow Leopard). But my brand new iMac with a fresh Mt. Lion install only has pictures. Are the old wallpapers hidden somewhere or are they gone for good? 😟

Those are not bundled with Mountain Lion but are preserved when an older system is upgraded to it. Preloaded desktop pictures are in the /Library/Desktop Pictures/ folder.

If you have a back up of you old system, you can physically move the folder over to your new Mac.
Or google for wallpaper alternatives to add
Use the Finder>Go>Go to Folder copy and paste:
/Library/Desktop Pictures/Where are the old desktop patterns?
