What is Microsoft Silverlight?

I recently signed up for Netflix and when I first tried to use it, it prompted me to install something called Microsoft Silverlight. As a former PC user, I am always skeptical about any Microsoft products. Can someone tell me what it is, and do I really need it? All else being equal, I would just as soon minimize the number of Microsoft products I install on my Mac as they usually turn out to be unreliable, buggy junk. Any thoughts/comments greatly welcomed. Thanks!!

I found the link you sent, thank you. It simply takes you to the Microsoft website for a description, not exactly what I wanted. If you had bothered to read my entire post, you would have noticed that I asked whether it is a necessary software, and asked for feedback from people that have used it.
