My ipad wouldn't update to the new ios, then lost a lot of my purchased items, and now my ipad is frozen on a screen that says its still connected to itunes when I don't even have it plugged in and my itunes wouldn't even recognize it in the first place. What should I do?

Try and force iPad into Recovery Mode
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

First, you have not lost any of your purchased items. Once we get the iPad working, you can get them back on to your iPad.
Start by trying to reset your iPad - hold down the Home and Power buttons and continue to hold them until the Silver Apple appears.
Let me know if that works and we can go from there....

It will not let me turn the device off or on. The red slider won't appear...it just goes black. And the screen says it is connected to my itunes on my computer, but it wasn't even plugged into the computer.
Have you tried the reset?
Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 second until you see the Apple Logo.

No, it did not work. Its stuck on the same screen saying I am connected to the computer, but its not.
Have you tried connecting it to your computer with your USB cable, and then launched iTunes on the computer?
Also, when you hold both buttons down for (at least) 20 seconds, what happens?

It will not even recognize my ipad.
And it just keeps going to the same screen. I have no idea why it is doing this. It happened after I was trying to update everything.
Are you connecting to a Mac or to a Windows machine? Are you running the most current version of iTunes?

Windows. And yes, it did update my itunes, but said it couldn't on my ipad. And somehow led to this screen issue.

I think your iPad is stuck in DFU mode
