Do you see the word "mail" appear beside the Apple in the top left corner??
Do you see the word "mail" appear beside the Apple in the top left corner??
Yes, when I click on the Mail icon, 'mail' appears beside the apple at the top but it does not open. This has even prevented me from shutting down or re-starting the laptop because messages come up telling me to quit the mail application first before shutting down and when I quit and try to shut-down, the same message pops up.
Ok, check to see if you may have slide your mail window, off the side of your display screen. Start by looking around the perimeter of your display screen for what may be a "window" that has been dragged off to the side.
Also change the position of your dock, by clicking on the Apple / dock - change the position to the right or left side, so you can view the bottom of the display without interference.
Look all around the perimeter of the screen
I've looked on the screen and even moved the dock to the left and right but there's no mail window. At the top right corner of the screen, i clicked on the icon at the edge (beside the spotlight icon) and it opened a part of the screen to show some new notifications. But when I clicked on them the Mail didn't open. It just appeared beside the apple icon like it does now.
If the word mail appears beside the apple, and does not quit unexpectedly, then it is open.
Try this -
- quit all open applications
- click finder in the bottom dock, and in the window that opens, select applications in the left column - scroll through until you see the 'Utilities' folder and double click to open it. Then double click on 'Disk Utility'
- When prompted to select a disk volume or image, select the 'Macintosh HD' in the left column
- ensure the the "first aid" tab is highlighted blue in the middle of the screen
- click the button at the bottom that says 'Repair Disk Permissions'
- this process will take a few minutes to run. It will indicate it's done, by scrolling to the bottom of the "details area" displaying 'Permissions repair complete'
- restart the computer - test the mail application
OS X version?
It's OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Quit Mail.
In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return. A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Relaunch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you'll have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
Thanks Karen for your suggestions. The icon is now working. From your last reply, I decided to try and restart the laptop first (the last step) so that if it doesn't work, I'll proceed step by step. To my surprise I could finally force quit the Mail application which refused to budge no matter what I pressed and restart. Now it's working again. What a relief. Thanks a lot. I'm sure all that moving of the dock, etc made it work. Thanks
