Now, when cueing movies for playback, I get an error message: THIS CONTENT REQUIRES HDCP for playback. I never used to get this message.

New situation: when cueing movies for playback, I get this error message:

THIS CONTENT REQUIRES HDCP FOR PLAYBACK.

Either your HDMI cable isn't properly connected or your HDMI connection doesn't support HDCP. Please reconnect your HDMI cable from your AppleTV to you HDTV and try again.

I've checked the HDMI cable connections and everything seems in order. I never used to get this message. All other AppleTV playback channels--music, YouTube, etc.--seem to function correctly and do not generate error message. I've performed the AppleTV software upgrade but still get the error messages with movie playback. What may be causing this? What do I need to fix it?

HDCP is a hardware handshake protocol between the Apple TV and your HDTV display. Most rented or purchased movies require it while music and YouTube do not, etc. You should try a different HDMI cable even though you say you checked the connections. The cable is always the prime suspect in these cases. There also might be a hardware problem on your HDTV or the Apple TV or the HDMI connector could have been damaged or defective.
