When using desktop spaces, new windows force me to "desktop 1"

I am having two issues when using desktop spaces, and am hoping for a little assisstance. 2011 iMac running Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2.

1. When an application has a pop-up / new window (not always a web browser, but this is included), the window will open in desktop 2 (or whichever I am using), but then the OS will switch to desktop 1 immediately. When I attempt to return to desktop 2, it won't stay open, but will rather return to desktop 1. To remedy this, I have to open mission control, drag the desired window to desktop 1, assume desktop 1, then drag the window bag to desktop 2, where it will allow me to stay. Sounds crazy, I know.

2. When on desktop 2, and opening a new application (i.e. iTunes) it will open on desktop 1 (and take me there), despite me wanting it to open on the desktop where I am working. I am then able to drag the new application wherever I want to work on it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

A good place to start, but it doesn't address item 1 from above - the problem where when I open up a new window (or a desired pop-up with a web browser) it leaves the new window on desktop 2 but takes me to desktop 1, and won't allow me to access and remain back on desktop 2 until I open mission control, drag the new window into desktop 1, and access it from there. It will then allow me to move the new window onto desktop 2 if I so choose, and remain on desktop 2, but only after first moving the new window from that desktop to desktop 1.

Your links were quite informative, and I definitely learned a thing or two, so thanks for the links!
