Password problems

I am a new iPad user. I have an apple ID/password and am able to get logged on;however, when I try to purchase an app and it asks for the password, it tells me that I am incorrect. I am using the same password that I use to log into my account. I don't know what I am doing wrong. Thank you for any help you can give me.
