hi, i have several movies which have .mov or .avi files extensions, bur quickitme won't read them.

i tried convertinge them and other movies with .mkv extension with smartconverter but that won't work. I also tried upgrading quicktime with flip4mac but that won't work either. any advice? txs

Were they originally mkv which you converted to mov and avi?

The file extension really doesn't mean much with video. The key is the codec that is used to encode the video. If that isn't readable by QuickTime, it won't play it regardless of the extension.

Try playing them with VLC. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

Thanks Barney, they were originally .mkv.

i had used vlc in the past but have troubles adjusting it to the screen size..

any idea on how to to make flip4mac work?

It is the same as with the basic QuickTime. If Flip4Mac can't understand the codec, it can't play them either. Flip4Mac just plays wmv, as far as I know.

The other option you may try is Perian. It is no longer under development, so it may break at some future update, but for now it works. It works like Flip4Mac, but for a lot of other video formats.

    Barney, THANKS SO MUCH!

in the meantime, i have downloaded VLC and it works perfectly! I guess it is much better adapted to the new macbook air I bought, compared to the old macbook pro 2006 i was using until last week.

    all the best!
