I just bought the latest Imac desk top computer and wish to use the the ipad 2 (Garageband instruments) as a master keyboard/controller. In other words I want to use the keyboards/drums/guitars available on the ipad to input to GarageBand on the imac. How is this done?

plug the headphone jack of the iPad into the line-IN jack on the iMac, and set the iMac to record from the line-IN:

create a New Basic Track in GB on the Mac; hit record and start playing the iPad instruments.
The Imac that I have (brand new as of yesterday) does not have a standard 1/8th inch Aux line in jack. Any other ideas?

okay, so, i have the "Apogee One", which will allow me to record into garage band as an audio track, but i was hopping to use the Ipad as a "MIDI" controller/keyboard input. The difference being that im sure when I record to Garagebadn on the Imac it will record it as one track and i would not have any control of the "events". Im sure there must be a way, I cant believe that apple would not allow you to use the ipad as a controller for garageband on the imac. It would be way more intuitive than using a qwerty keyboard as an instrument. So, again, is there any kind of connection that would allow the two programs to communicate to each other?; Garageband on both the Imac and the Ipad?
Your comment on using the aux in certainly helped but i need to control the imac instruments from the ipad.

iPad, very likely, but i do not believe GB supports MIDI-OUT, so you'd need to use other software

Go on the App Store on your ipad and download the "logic remote" app. It is free and does exactly what you want for garageband....wirelessly!!
