I tried to install BackTrack 5 R3 on my MacBook Pro so I downloaded the iso and burned it on the DVD. When rebooting I pressed and held the option key, however, it only showed Macintosh HD and Recovery. Consequently, I rebooted again and this time pressed and held C but nothing happened. Can someone help me?

It's possible that the DVD is not a bootable one. Are you sure the ISO was burned correctly and that it should be a bootable DVD?

I'm sure I burned it correctly as I used the Mac's built in burner however I'm not sure if my DVD is bootable; it is maxell 16x speed dvd-r sq data 4.7gb 120min video.
It's not the DVD (media) that would govern if it's bootable or not, it's the image you burn on it that indicates if it's bootable or not. Find out from the makers of that image if it's support to be a bootable image/DVD.
BackTrack 5 is bootable. Try flashing it to a USB drive.
