set xls in emails to open with excel

Yesterday I migrated all my files and settings from my core duo 2.66 macbook pro to my new i7 quad 2.6.

Excel did not transfer over right, so I uninstalled and re-installed. It now works fine, but when I click an excel attachment (xls or xlsx) from an email it will not open. It gives me tha choice of what to open with, but will not open.

I now have to save the file and then fine it in finder to click.

If I click on any excel file in finder, it opens properly.

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)

Then I guess I'll start over tomorrow. Thanks for your help

At least I've downloaded the updates 14.2 and 14.3 so they are on my drive.

I don't really like playing with scripts or deleting miscellaneous things, which is why I thought that uninstaller would be the way to go to avoid screwups.

All more reasons to hate microsoft, but no one comes close to Excel, that I've used since version 1.2 for Mac back in the late 80's or so, except for the period of excel 2008 that had no macros.

All more reasons to hate microsoft,

The uninstaller you used has nothing to do with Microsoft so (for once) we won't blame them. But shame on MS for not providing one with Office 2011 (Office 2008 for Mac had one, MS left it out in 2011)

Other than Excel Office 2011 is dreadful, Word is mediocre and Outlook does not support iCloud services (contacts and calendars etc) at all (curiously the Windows version does support iCloud, but as I said, MS never make much sense)

Excel for Windows is the benchmark for spreadsheets, Excel for Mac not quite as good but second best.

One more time.

Uninstalled again, this time also searching for anything microsoft. Found a couple of office 2008 components that the uninstaller (that came with it) did not remove when I uninstalled 2008 a few month's ago.

Also moved a "Microsoft Excel.plist" that wasn't anywhere in the removal instructions. I don't know what it does.

So thing are fine now. I can start my updates again

thanks
