how do i move videos to imovie

When i had my PC, I would record video on my iphone then move it to my PC to back it up. When i bought my Mac Mini, I moved then videos from my PC to a jumpdrive, then to the mac. My pics and vids where read/saved as documents. I would like to export them to iMovie but im having alot of trouble. Can anyone help me?
