I am trying to open up a file that has a box with a dotted line around it. It says that it is unable to find the file. I found part of it in the recovery folder in my trash. Is there anywhere else to look for the rest?

Can you restore the file from a backup?
I don't think I did anything to back it up?? Like I don't have time machine or anything.
Is there an automatic backup. I have tried the invisble files and the recovery folder. I am freaking out.
As long as your TimeMachine icon is turned on from the preference pane you have access to local snapshots

I suggest you need to start making backups to avoid this problem in the future. Time Machine or a cloning program will work.

I didn't delete it, and I know that I saved it so I am not sure why it is not there. It says its is there but wont let me open it and is not showing up in the folder.

When I go to "past week" on my microsoft word it says it is there and shows up just a box with dashed lines around it and when it says "location" it says it is in the my "Math" folder. But if I open my math folder from finder it is not in there. When I click on it from microsoft word it says that it cannot be found.
You are going to need some type of data recovery program to recover the file. The first link from my post above covers that in some detail.
