iMovie not working with footage from Nikon D3200

I'm using iMovie on my Macbook Pro and it usually works perfectly but i'm trying to make a video with the footage I took on my Nikon D3200 and iMovie works for about 5 minutes and then grinds to a holt. The clips uploaded fine but playback is slow/non existant. I end up having to restart the program only for it to happen again. Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)
