I have old personal DVD's from old video cameras how do I import them into iMovies to edit them?

Hi, years ago, I had VHS and 8mm camera tapes put onto DVD's via a DVD recorder, which I no longer have. I would like to edit the contents of these DVD's in iMovie, for her 60th birthday present a friend has asked me to give her a copy of all the early videos I did of us and their children on holidays etc, before they got their own camera.

I can't see a way to import the content of existing DVDs into iMovie to allow me to do this. I do know I can copy the whole DVD in disk utilities, but I don't want to do this - too much other stuff that is of no interest to her.
