kernel panic almost every day

Hi all,

Please bare with me, its my first time posting here but i have this ongoing issue that i have no idea how to approach. I've been getting constant kernel panic attacks where my macbook screen just goes black and i have to force shut-down and restart.

I've extracted my panic logs and tried to decipher it but i have no idea what i'm reading.

Can someone please shed some light on my issue? Much appreciated.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities

You have a Mid 2010 15-inch MacBook Pro and your log shows that your NVIDIA graphic card is failing.

A lot of Mid 2010 15-inch MacBooks Pro have got a defective NVIDIA graphic card that may cause OS X to show kernel panics, unexpected reboots, black screens... Fortunately, Apple is replacing the logic board of these Macs for free > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US

To get your Mac repaired for free, take the Mac to an Apple Store or reseller. As the whole logic board has to be replaced, the repair may take some days. Also, make a backup of your files before taking it in

Thank you for the quick response! apple wants me to download the support file first and update, so i'll try and keep a close watch the never several days.

How do you deteremine it was the nvidia card failing by reading the log? I would like to educate myself and learn how to read these panic logs should something similar occur in the future. Thanks again for your prompt responses

If you look your log, you will see this:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):

com.apple.driver.AGPM(100.12.31)@0xdd3000->0xdddfff

dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x9e3000

dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0xa05000

dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x909000

com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x15d2000->0x19e6fff

dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0xa12000

com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0xa12000->0xcfffff

dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x909000

dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0xa05000

dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x9e3000

When you see a log, what you see under "Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies)" are the extensions that made OS X to crash. You can see that all the extensions are related to graphic extensions, but the last lines refers specifically to your NVIDIA extensions.

Also, your log shows that you have other third-party applications that may cause the problem, but they should appear with your NVIDIA extensions, so they aren't causing that kernel panic.
