iMessage isn't working on my cell says "waiting on activation"

My iMessage isn't working properly on my phone but is working on my iPad 2. In the settings of "message" it shows on iMessage "waiting on activation" I've tried resetting but that didn't work. Anyone have any ideas or experienced this before???

I'm also having audio problems with my iPad 2. The sound doesn't work on any message notifications either. So I'm a stressed & frustrated customer right about now too!

Is it just iMessage that's complaining about activation, or internet in general? I know when I got my 4S, there must have been a bad batch of SIMs, because both my wife and I had a problem where the internet simply wasn't accessible because the phone wasn't "authorized". In my case, a simple SIM swap at the wireless store fixed it; for my wife, she eventually got a replacement phone from Apple.
