I want to install an updated version of Adobe Flash. i am being instructed to close Safari (no problem) and Dashboard Client. How can I temporarily disable Dashboard Client so that I can install the update? I am currently using MacBook Pro with OS X 10.8.2.
I've never had it ask me to disable dashboard client. If you quit Safari, does it still tell you to close dashboard client?

Like Eric Root, I have never seen that message and I have installed versions of the software many times.
As a test, I just downloaded and then installed the latest version of Adobe Flash. The installer DID NOT ask me to close anything.

Use Terminal to disable the Dashboard. Go to Applications>Utilities>Terminal
Once you have the window open in Terminal copy & paste this command to disable it:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES
Then, restart the Dock using the following command:
killall Dock
If you want to enable your Dashboard again simply replaceYES with NO in the top command and repeat the process.

I've had this problem too.
I found that because I had a Safari Web Clip on my Dashboard the Flash installer would bring this error.
My solution was to close the web clip, reboot OSX and voila! Clean install ...

Thank you ueman, following your steps, I had a widget in my dashboard that uses Adobe Flash Reader, and by closing it, I solved my problem, closing DashboardClient.
