Why can't I open PowerPoint on iPad

PowerPoint attachments in my email accounts won't open on my iPad ios 5.1.1. Any suggestions?

My assumptions would be that the files are too large - very large attachments may not open on the iPad - or at least that has been my experience - and some PP files can be pretty large, or the files were not saved properly or in the correct format with the correct file extension.

.ppt and .pptx (Microsoft PowerPoint);
