My 600 song strong library takes up nearly 6 gigs, is this right?

Lately my ipad has been in a crunch for memory, i went to general settings and i only have 560ish songs. It said this was taking up nearly 6 gbs of space. I have download songs from CDs and other sorts of media but is this right? is there a way to shrink down song memory size?
