Is it ok, or does it do damage to charge an iPhone overnight?

I often charge my battery before I fall asleep. If it were to stay plugged in, does it do damage to the battery or the device?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.1

iDevices can be plugged in and left plugged in indefinitely without issues. I've had iPhones for 4 years and always charged them by leaving them plugged in overnight. Never had a battery issue.
