Q: Is the magsafe adapter replacement/exchange program still in effect?

I read elsewhere that program to replace the older T-shaped magsafe adapter was to last through 12/31/2012.   Does anyone know if Apple has done free replacements beyond that date?

My T-shaped magsafe adapter from a mid-2009 MacBook Pro is acting up and looks to be fraying a bit.  Before I actually go into the store I'd like to get an idea of what I can expect.

From About Apple's Power Adapter Replacement Program -- U.S. only

Note: This program will cover strain relief for a period of three years after the purchase of an adapter with computer or a standalone adapter.

Whether your product is in or out of warranty, you can take your adapter to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store for evaluation and replacement if necessary. Pending the results of evaluation, you may or may not be eligible for a replacement adapter free of charge. Signs of accidental damage would negate any coverage. Be sure to bring in the computer used with the adapter; it is required to process potential adapter replacements.

I have been to that page, but it seems to partially conflict the info at the adaptersettlement.com site it links to.

Apple page:  "Whether your product is in or out of warranty, you can take your adapter to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store for evaluation and replacement if necessary."

Settlement page: "For Adapters shipped with a Subject Computer, you will have three years from the date of purchase of the Subject Computer or May 21, 2012, whichever is later, to claim a replacement adapter. ... If you do not claim a replacement adapter within these time periods, you will lose your right to obtain a replacement."

    I did keep reading.

One of the issues is that the settlement page indicates the program is over on 12/31/12.   The Apple page lists no end date (but it does link to the settlement page).

I called a nearby authorized Apple Service provider and they told me that they no longer do the free replacements, that the program ended at the end of 2012 and that I'd have to buy a new adapter.

So I made a Genius Bar appt at an Apple store.  Short version is that he hooked me up with a free new (60W) adapter in less than 5 minutes (after looking up my mid-2009 MPB serial # in his system).  I didn't ask him if there's an end date for when they'll stop doing replacements.

Good show. That was precisely the reason for my recommendation to keep reading - the very next sentence.
