Stopped - 'Filter' failed - printing canon D550

Hi- I recently got an iMac with 10.8.2 and I am having trouble printing to my canon d550 multifunction printer/scanner. The scanner works fine, but when I try to print I get a "Stopped - 'Filter' failed" error message. I talked to mac support twice. They suggested I reinstall the driver. That didn't work, so they said it was a canon issue. I talked to canon , they guided me through an in depth driver re-install (I went into the canon folder, deleted original files and reinstalled the driver twice). It didn't work and they said it was a mac issue. I know that somewhere in this beautiful world there is a person who knows how to get my computer to communicate with my printer! Please, help me! Thanks so much- Nick

Did Apple or Canon get you to perform a reset of the printing system?

http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11143?viewlocale=en_US

This will remove the printer from Print & Scan but not the UFR2 driver files, so you will only have to add the printer again.

If you have already done this, can you confirm which filter the error references. Maybe a screen grab of the error message?

Thanks for that. Doesn't give too many clues as to the cause.

Next action is to open System Information (Applications > Utilities) and select Printers in the left column. The right pane should show the Canon D500 (if you have more than one printer you will need to select the D500 in the top right pane). Can you select all the information shown for the D500, copy and paste back here please.

Thanks for supplying that information. It shows that you are running the new MF Printer Driver v1.1.0. Since this model is also supported by the UFR2 driver, I recommend you download this UFR2 driver via this link and install.

After installing the new UFR2 driver, open Print & Scan and remove the current D500 printer. Then click to add the D500 again, but this time ensure you select "Canon D500 Series (UK)" in the Use menu.

Then see if you can print without getting a filter error.

I have the same issue with my Canon MF3010 Laser Printer. I have reset printer setting, deleted printer from my late 2012 iMac. I even switched USB ports. All still not working.

Can you also follow the instruction above for getting the MF3010 information shown in System Information and then pasting back here.

WORKING PERFECTLY!!

I am in the US. I have a late 2012 model mac mini with OS 10.8. I have a Canon MF4770n. There are drivers on the US website for Canon which are supposed to support the above. I too receive "Printing stopped-Filter failed". I have tried both Canon and Apple support multiple times without success. I have the printer on my home wireless network. What can I do to correct this?

My system report re: this printer is:

This is not an Apple issue. It is an issue with the Canon driver. You need to get back to Canon and insist they report this to Canon INC. This v1.1.0 driver is causing too many problems and Canon has to do something about resolving these issues.

I read a few more of your posts and found the solution!. I just wrote the following on Amazon:

I wrote the message which follows this text out of frustration I was hoping others would avoid. I actually found the solution to the problem which I have below after the jump.

The error message: "Printer Stopped-Filter failed". I purchased this printer in January and have used it with my MacBook which has OS X 10.7 Lion. Works great via Airport extreme. I recently purchased a Mac Mini late 2012 model which has OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. I made five calls to Canon and five calls to Apple over a 24 hour period. Each call was particularly time-consuming and frustrating due to the following. Canon and Apple says it is the other's problem. The Canon website and support personnel including the engineer consulted claim it is definitely supported by Mountain Lion. Apple's latest set of printers supported came out in January and not only is this printer not supported, BUT ALL of the MF (multi-function) printers are not supported...since they are not on the list. I have written and spoken to Canon that this printer may be supported by Mountain Lion to the engineers, but to the consumer, it is not supported. Apple has no clue where the Canon submission may be in the pipeline, nor are they even able to find out. There is no timetable for Apple support. "It will come through on Software Update when it is available" says Apple. In the meantime, the quality of the printer is excellent to me....but for its lack of Mountain Lion support to me as a consumer.

....the SOLUTION (at least for me) is as follows. After downloading the drivers, proceed to the System preference>Print & Scan>+ (to add this printer)>select IP>enter IP address of the Canon>choose LPD>Leave Queue empty>Name Canon 4700 and use the Canon 4700 series. Now here is the critical step: go back to the print& scan window. Mountain Lion defaults to not sharing the printer. Select share this printer on network. Turn on Printer and Scanner sharing checkboxes. In the Printers window click the box next to the Canon. Click on "everyone". THIS DEFAULTS TO NO ACCESS...THUS I BELIEVE THE REASON FOR FILTER FAILED. Click to up/down arrow and select can print. That should be it.

I am no big computer whiz....but this worked!
