Hello,
I want to change my iCloud email name (not the actual email address itself, but the name that appears when someone receives the message). Every time I go to Mail in iCloud.com and to Preferences to do it, it doesn't work and won't change. It just changes straight back to the old one.
Any ideas why this might be?

It's very odd.
You may need to try turning iCloud Mail off and on again.
Hello! I was actually having this same problem. My account was opened in my mother's name and I couldn't change it. It was really frustrating when all of my academic and professional emails would be sent out under her name.
If you have a mac, open your mail. Go up to the top of your computer screen where all of your options are (Apple sign, Mail, File, Edit, etc.,) and click on mail. Go to preferences.
Look at your iCloud account and it should show you your alias (your email address) and underneath that your "full name" will be shown, except that can't be selected.
Click on your email address that's shown after "Alias:" then click "Edit aliases" (that should be the last option on the list.)
That will take you to iCloud.com in Safari and after you sign in you will be given the option to change your name.
And ta-da!! It should be fixed! 🙂
If you do not have a mac, (or want an easier process I guess)
Go to iCloud.com and sign in
Go to mail, then click on the little settings button in the bottom left corner.
A list should pop up with "Preferences…" at the top. Click on it.
A new little screen will pop up with options lined up at the top with a little "@" sign for your account.
Click on that and then you will be given the option to change your name 🙂
