My 24-inch Late 2006 iMac has been misbehaving lately. I've noticed odd graphic bits and pieces appearing on the screen, sometimes whole patches of weird patterns, sometimes a couple of tiny squares.

I presume this is connected: today I had what I think was a kernel panic, the second one in a few weeks. The machine restarted itself. The report is headed ...

nigmia -- Your question isn't addressed to me, but I do have some thoughts for you. The random graphics issues sounds like a graphics card going bad.  There's nothing you can do to improve that. It needs to be fixed by Apple, IMHO. If, for some really weird reason, it's the result of bad software, your likely culprits          4.1.0com.logmein.driver.LogMeInSoundDriver          1.0.0com.rogueamoeba.HermesAudio          4.1.0com.AmbrosiaSW.AudioSupport          4.1.2jp.plentycom.driver.SteerMouse          4.1.4  You keep stating that you have no rogueamoeba apps on there, but you most certainly do. They show up on your report twice.  If it were my Mac, I would dump all of the above.  Find out of they can be just trashed, or if they need to be uninstalled.  That info can be found on their websites. Kernel Panics are very serious.  They can permanently damage your Hard Drive.  As to your question as to whether your Mac is still viable  -- I have the same year's iMac.  It a work horse!  I would love a new one, but I can't justify it. It just keeps "going, and going and going . . ."  It's on the latest OS, as well.   I think your machine is very much still viable, but I would take it in and have them check out the graphics card and the logic board.  But only after you've really deleted all the crap software on there, and at least you are positive they are not causing your problems. Hang in . . .

Yes, noises from the HD are very worrying.  I would take it in, at this point.

There is more information under there that you have not included.  I would not be surprised if it is a graphics card or logic board issue.

These have been known to cause problems for others posting here, nigmia.  I would make certain they are all still compatible.  Also, rethink these:  Do you really need them?

This is scary to me, however:

Is your Lion updated to 10.7.5?

  • nigmia Level 1 Level 1

Bee, thanks for your continuing help, I really appreciate it.

You'll have to be patient with me, though - not too tech-savvy, I'm afraid.

How do I make sure those drivers you've nominated are "still compatible"?

And as for the scary thing, yes, my Lion is roaring at 10.7.5. So what does that scary message mean?

  • ~Bee Level 7 Level 7

If you have Airfoil for Mac, it is now at 4.7.5

But I can't tell which rogue you have on there.

Go to the websites of the others and see which versions are compatible with Lion:  Ambrosi, SteerMours & LogMeIn.

  • nigmia Level 1 Level 1

Bee, where do I find these drivers? I've searched for those filenames, and I can't see them.

I don't use Airfoil any more, so that one can go. The app is long gone, so where is this driver lurking?

Logmein I use occasionally, but I'm confused: I've checked, and the app is the current version. So, again, where is this driver? And how do I check if it is current/compatible?

Ambrosia's Wiretap Pro I use occasionally, too, but again, I've checked and I have the current version of the app, but I don't know how to check this driver.

Steermouse I have on all the time. The app is up to date.

Any ideas, Bee, anyone? I'm at a bit of a loss here.

    nigmia --

Do you have ANY other rogueameoba apps on there? Is AudioHiJack on there? Use the search function and look for rougueamoeba files.  If you find any, delete them.  Let us know, OK?

Then I would apply the 10.7.5 COMBO Update from here:

    Then repair permissions.

  • nigmia Level 1 Level 1

    Thanks, Bee.

I have no Rogue Amoeba apps on my machine. So what's that driver doing there, I wonder?

Anyway, I'm in the middle of a project here and don't fancy doing the combo update right now, but I'll get to it at the weekend and report back.

Thanks again for the help, which is much appreciated.

These old iMac 24 have mxm Nvidia 7300GT or 7600GT graphic card. And these i getting very hot because of machine not notice if graphic card temperatures get high, only cpu temperature get fan little higher.

Use smc fan control to set minimum fan speed. Cpu fan 2000, hdd fan 2000, and odd fan about 1800. These help really much to keep iMac cooler. And it will last longer. If fans get sooner failure, these are cheaper than MXM GPU card.

These graphic errors come when GPU die gets about 50 - 60 celsius. And that's not much.

    Hope this helps you.

  • nigmia Level 1 Level 1

Raunok, thanks for the suggestion, I've downloaded SMC Fan Control and have set it as you suggested. So far my iMac seems to be running about 39, 40 degress C, so I'll see if it makes any difference.

  • nigmia Level 1 Level 1

OK, Bee, I hope you're still watching.

I've now done all you suggested.

I have no Rogue Amoeba apps on my machine at all, although I did notice an old R.O. Helper startup item (with an 'Unknown' next to it), which I've now stopped.

I've applied the 10.7.5 combo update. And then I repaired permissions.

Obviously now I'm crossing my fingers, but is there a way I can see if this has improved anything?

    Good, nigmia --

Hopefully, you won't have any more KPs.  If you do, copy the report, and paste it to this thread .We're keeping our fingers crossed for you.
