the keyboard and the mouse were recently stolen from my iMac. I have a new bluetooth mouse and keyboard now, but how can I make them connect with my computer, which is still searching when booting for the old keyboard and mouse?

Do you have a wired USB keyboard & Mouse that you can beg, borrow or steal (maybe not the last one) just to get you to the point that you can delete the lost devices in BT Prefs? You'll then be able to pair the new items.
