printing list of folders in finder
How do you print a list of the contents of a folder in finder? For example, a list of all the documents stored in a specific folder on your desktop.

The problem is that the folder has 700 items in it. This would take multiple screenshots. Not an efficient solution.
So this doesn't really solve the problem.
First, do a screen shot -
http://movies.apple.com/movies/us/podcast/quicktips/quicktips-09-snapshots_of_yo ur_screen.m4v., and http://www.apple.com/in/pro/tips/secretcapture.html - are both links to apple support web pages, which give instruction on how to take a "screen capture" on your mac.
Once you have the screen shot - open it by double clicking on it. It will open in Preview. Then simply go to "file / print"
My automator menu does not have "Get Names of finder Items" or "New Text File". Well, at least I cannot them. I am using Mt. Lion.
I found a trick. Just select all the folders and Copy. Then paste into Excel or Numbers - you will get a nice listing of all the folder names.
So I have to spend hours trying to figure out automator, which does not have any of the listed actions on my computer, to do what should be a simple intuitive thing on a Mac? This is why Apple has jumped the shark. You no longer care about users but only care about appearances. Flat icons are great but who cares if you can't print the contents of a folder.

I am still on Snow Leopard (10.6.5) and when I (rarely) print folderlists I use the
excellent application "Printwindow" from searchwaresolutions.com
Take a look. I think it will help you out. Not sure if it works on 10.5.8 or not.
Try an app called Print Window
You'll need version 4.1.5 to work in Snow Leopard. I don't know if you can get it from the vendor.
The Lion and later version is available through the App Store.
Great little devise - use it all the time.

Yes I found a 3rd party app but why should I have to pay for an app just to print folder contents? This should be a basic easy command built into every Mac OS.
Print Window is free if you can live with black and white.
In 10.10.5 it's easy:
1. Open a new document in TextEdit and make sure it's Plain Text (under Format).
2. In the Finder copy the contents of the folder whose filenames you want to print.
3. Paste in TextEdit
4. Print!
Voila!!! Simple and quick solution. Thank you!!!
Thanks, I think that works in any version of OSX, just tried it in 10.5.8, copied the folder names entered a space in Text Edit, then doze Paste & match style. 🙂
Thank you, it works great!
